The full financial commitment

Compare complete season costs in Canadian dollars. The example below is a planning exercise, not a published BC fee estimate or a quote for any club. Replace every number with your own information.
| Expense | Illustrative amount |
|---|---|
| Club fee | $2,000 |
| Tryouts and membership outside the fee | $150 |
| Uniforms and equipment outside the fee | $250 |
| Four trips at $550 each for travel lodging and meals | $2,200 |
| Additional training or team charges | $300 |
| Subtotal | $4,900 |
| Contingency of 10 percent | $490 |
| Planning total | $5,390 |
Get the exclusions in writing
- Does the fee include memberships, tournament entries, Provincials, Nationals, coaches’ travel, clothing and strength training?
- Can the team add events or charges later? Is there a spending ceiling or parent approval process?
- Are fundraising, volunteer shifts, team hotels or specific clothing purchases required?
- What is refunded if the athlete is injured, withdraws or the team is cancelled? What happens if the coach or practice schedule changes?
- Is a deposit refundable, and what outstanding balance remains if the athlete leaves?
Leaving a team does not necessarily end the financial commitment. Obtain both the refund policy and the payment agreement before signing; do not assume disappointment about playing time creates a refund entitlement.
Measure time as well as dollars
Write down weekly practices, driving, strength sessions and expected weekend travel. Include parent work absences and siblings’ needs. A fee that fits the budget can still create a commitment the family cannot sustain.
Keep a simple decision record
For each offer, record the coach, gym, expected role, roster size, total cost, mandatory trips, unanswered questions and acceptance deadline. Mark information as confirmed in writing, verbally stated or unknown. An unknown is a question to resolve, not an automatic zero or a reason to invent an answer.
Ask about payment plans or financial assistance privately. Set the family’s limit before discussing upgrades or extra training with your child. Protecting the household budget is a legitimate part of choosing a team.
BC travel can change the comparison
Request the proposed tournament calendar before comparing fees. Separate committed events from optional or qualification-dependent trips. For ferry travel, budget vehicle fares, reservations and an extra night if the schedule requires it. For northern and Interior teams, ask about flights, long drives and winter alternatives. Include coaches’ expenses if families share them.
Questions before paying a deposit
What exactly does the deposit accept? What remains owed if the athlete withdraws? Are refunds different for injury, team cancellation or a changed coach? Ask for the dated payment agreement and refund policy together. Keep receipts and use the club’s designated payment channel.
